Direct measurement of steady-state shear viscosity using a multiple-speed test performed with the Mooney Gibitre viscometer

Steady-state shear viscosity in rubber processing is one of the key parameters for predicting the processing behavior of unvulcanized rubber compounds.
The rheological behavior of elastomeric systems is one of the most important aspects in evaluating processability in various operations such as mixing, forming, molding, calendering, and extrusion.
Typically, shear viscosity is measured using a high-pressure capillary rheometer equipped with capillary or slit dies.

- The Gibitre Mooney viscometer is equipped with a motor controller that allows tests to be performed at multiple speeds.
- The instrument was developed to allow the setting of multiple speeds/points for each test.
- The special drive mechanism allows for instantaneous adjustment of the rotor speed during a test and enables operation over a wide range of rotational speeds (from 0.01 to 20 rpm), corresponding to shear rates ranging from 10⁻³ s⁻¹ to 16 s⁻¹.


Steady-state torque values are used to generate the flow curve.
The software allows you to set the test duration for each specific rotational speed.
The conversion of Mooney torque (MU) to viscosity (Pa·s) and of rotor rotational speed (RPM) to shear rate (s⁻¹) was performed according to the Tokita-White equations.
The software automatically plots the ML versus rotor speed, the ML versus shear rate, and the steady-state shear viscosity flow curve versus shear rate.





The results obtained with the instrument were validated by analyzing samples of raw elastomer and unprocessed compound and by comparing the steady-state shear viscosity data obtained with the viscometer to those obtained with a capillary rheometer and to the complex viscosity values obtained using an RPA.
The results showed a good correlation. The results are available upon request.
