ASTM D543
Standard Practices for Evaluating the Resistance of Plastics to Chemical Reagents

ASTM D543 establishes testing procedures to evaluate the chemical resistance of elastomers and plastics through controlled immersion in various liquid media. The standard applies to rubbers, thermoplastic elastomers, and plastic materials, assessing changes in weight, volume, and mechanical properties—including hardness and tensile strength—following exposure to solvents, mineral oils, acids, and other chemical substances. Test samples are submerged at specified temperatures for defined durations, enabling manufacturers to determine material behavior in corrosive environments and select appropriate elastomers for specific industrial applications.
